Extending protection to preserve pangolins

Pangolins are a highly endangered and illegally traded species, and the world has only recently become aware of their plight.

This mammal has been disappearing at an alarming rate for years. Estimates predict a staggering loss of one million pangolins between 2011 and 2021 – and recent research suggests that the actual figures could be even higher. We are in danger of letting this species become extinct before we truly understand it.

The Tikki Hywood Foundation (https://www.tikkihywoodfoundation.org), which is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and reintroduction of pangolins in Zimbabwe and Congo, was founded 30 years ago and specialises in the protection of pangolins. Since 2012, it has been monitoring released pangolins and has collected valuable data on their behaviour and habitats.

A new project aims to expand existing programmes and create a specialised outreach unit to share knowledge and support other conservation initiatives. New team members will be recruited, additional vehicles and equipment will be purchased, and tracking devices and training materials will be provided. This is another step towards achieving the overall goal of improving pangolin conservation and preventing the species from extinction.

With our donation, we are supporting the Tikki Hywood Foundation in implementing the F.O.O.T.P.R.I.N.T. (Fostering Ongoing Outreach Through Pangolin Research Initiatives Nationwide Together) project.
