Flowering Bergedorf Tram station (Hamburg)
Wild bees are among the most important pollinators in our ecosystems. However, many species are threatened, particularly by habitat loss, the use of pesticides and a lack of nesting sites.
Since 2015, the German Wildlife Foundation has been working hard to protect wild bees and other pollinating insects. In addition to Berlin and Munich, Hamburg is also being made more wild bee-friendly through the creation of numerous flowering areas. These colourful habitats provide food and shelter for countless species of wild bees and other pollinators – a crucial contribution to biodiversity in the heart of cities.
In cooperation with the Hamburg Transport Association (hvv), the German Wildlife Foundation is bringing nature back to the city: intensively maintained green spaces at underground and suburban railway stations, which are of little value to insects, are being transformed into flowering oases for wild bees and other pollinators.
We liked this approach, so we are supporting the German Wildlife Foundation in transforming another station area in Hamburg into a blooming and buzzing stop: at the Bergedorf S-Bahn station, a 120 m² wildflower meadow has been created on a previously intensively maintained green space that was of little value to urban nature. A new paradise for wild bees has been created in the middle of the city, offering a diverse range of food and nesting opportunities. Information boards will educate the public about the role of wild bees and the importance of flowering meadows.
