Support of an elephant orphan

Adoption of the elephant Mokogodo at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

We have long had a special fondness for elephants. We have always been deeply impressed by these gentle giants, both when we have met them in Thailand and in Africa.

Unfortunately, elephants have been an endangered species for a very long time. Many elephants fall victim to poaching, but they also suffer from the loss and fragmentation of their habitats by humans.

This is why our first project for the protection of endangered species is dedicated to elephants.

We have chosen the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org) for the adoption. It is one of the oldest aid organisations in Africa and was the first organisation to protect endangered elephants by raising elephant orphans. The organisation has always pursued the goal of reintegrating elephant orphans into the wild as far as possible. Having started out 45 years ago with the protection of the first elephant orphans, the Trust is now responsible for many animal welfare projects in Kenya. During a visit on site, we were able to gain an impression of the Trust's work and approach - and see with our own eyes how devotedly and with great dedication the little elephants are prepared for their future life in the wild.

The elephant orphan we are supporting, Mokogodo, was found by rangers in the Mukogodo Forest in Kenya in February 2023. As soon as it was clear that she had lost her herd, i.e. she was an orphan, help was requested and Mokogodo was flown to the Nairobi Nursery of the Sheldrick Wildlife Shelter. When Mokogodo was found she was about 4 months old, now she is 15 months old. She has settled into her new home well and is growing up in the company of the other elephant orphans.
